The State of GEO & AI Search Visibility, 2026

How AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot) are changing the way brands get found, and what the data says actually works to get cited. 60+ statistics, every one sourced and linked.

Last updated: Compiled by Algokracia, an AI-search visibility agency
−58%

The presence of an AI Overview correlates with a 58% lower clickthrough rate for the top-ranking page (Ahrefs, 300,000 keywords, December 2025).[10]

~62%

Roughly 62% of Google AI Overview citations come from outside the organic top-10, only about 38% of cited pages also rank top-10 (Ahrefs, 4M URLs).[12]

4.4×

The average AI-search visitor is 4.4 times as valuable as a visit from traditional organic search, by conversion rate (Semrush, 2025).[19]

800M

More than 800 million people use ChatGPT every week (OpenAI, October 2025), up from 500M in March 2025.[1]

1 · The shift is already mainstream

AI assistants moved from novelty to daily habit in under three years. Usage is now measured in hundreds of millions of weekly users, and a meaningful share of everyday search already passes through an AI layer.

  • More than 800 million people use ChatGPT every week as of October 2025, OpenAI's Sam Altman announced at DevDay, up from ~500M in March.[1]
  • About half of U.S. adults now use AI chatbots, and 44% have used ChatGPT specifically, more than double the 18% of 2023 (Pew, 2026).[3]
  • 34% of U.S. adults had used ChatGPT by early 2025, about double the share from 2023, rising to 58% among adults under 30 (Pew).[4]
  • 58% of U.S. adults ran at least one Google search that produced an AI-generated summary in a single month of tracked browsing (Pew, 2025).[2]
  • Daily AI-search users in the U.S. more than doubled from 14% to 29.2% between February and August 2025 (EMARKETER).[31]

2 · Google AI Overviews & the click collapse

Google's AI Overviews are the biggest single force changing search behavior right now, both in reach and in how sharply they cut clicks to websites.

  • Google AI Overviews reached more than 1.5 billion users per month by Q1 2025, CEO Sundar Pichai told investors.[5]
  • AI Overviews are now available in 200+ countries and territories and 40+ languages (Google, 2025).[6]
  • AI Overviews appear on 20.5% of all SERPs, nearly 30 million of 146 million desktop results analyzed (Ahrefs, 2025).[7]
  • They trigger on just 9.5% of single-word queries but 46.4% of 7-plus-word queries, AI answers favor complex, conversational questions (Ahrefs).[7]
  • Zero-click news searches on Google rose from 56% when AI Overviews launched (May 2024) to nearly 69% a year later (Similarweb, 2025).[11]
  • With an AI summary present, users clicked a traditional result on only 8% of visits versus 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary on just 1% (Pew, 2025).[2]

3 · Who AI actually cites

AI engines do not just read off the top of Google. They pull from a wider pool of sources, and they disagree with each other constantly. That is the threat and the opening for brands at the same time.

  • Only ~38% of pages cited in AI Overviews also rank in Google's organic top-10, down from ~76% a year earlier, so the majority of citations now come from outside the top results (Ahrefs, 4M URLs, 2026).[12]
  • Just 16.7% of AI Overview citations come from the top-10 organic results, as Google seeks diversity within ranked content (BrightEdge, 16-month study).[13]
  • Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit together account for about 15% of the sources listed in Google's AI summaries (Pew, 2025).[2]
  • Perplexity cites 21.87 sources per answer on average versus ChatGPT's 7.92, 2.76× more sources per question (Qwairy, 669,065 citations, 2025).[15]
  • Of 11,647 domains cited across five AI engines, 69.6% were cited by only one engine and just 2.7% by all five, there is almost no consensus on sources (SurfacedBy).[16]
  • 62% of AI citations never name the brand in the answer text, a source can be used without the brand being mentioned (Semrush "Ghost Citations", 2026).[17]

4 · Does AI traffic actually convert?

AI referral volume is still small, but it punches far above its weight on engagement and conversion. The visitors tend to arrive later in the decision, already informed.

  • Traffic to U.S. retail sites from generative-AI sources rose 1,200% from July 2024 to February 2025 (Adobe Analytics).[18]
  • AI-referred visitors browse 12% more pages per visit, bounce 23% less, and show 8% higher engagement than other traffic (Adobe).[18]
  • The conversion gap for AI traffic narrowed from 43% less likely to convert (July 2024) to just 9% less likely (February 2025), and is still closing (Adobe).[18]
  • An AI-search visitor is 4.4× as valuable as a traditional organic visitor, measured by conversion rate (Semrush, 2025).[19]
  • ChatGPT traffic converted at 1.81% versus 1.39% for non-branded organic, 31% higher, across 94 e-commerce sites (Visibility Labs / Search Engine Land).[21]
  • LLM referral traffic grew ~80% from the first to the second half of 2025, yet still accounts for under 2% of total referral traffic on average (Search Engine Land, 2026).[22]
  • Over the 2025 holidays, generative-AI referrals jumped 693% year over year and revenue per visit from AI referrals rose 254% (Adobe).[23]

5 · What actually works to get cited

This is the practical part. Controlled experiments and large correlation studies point the same way: be quotable, back your claims with data, and build a brand the engines recognize as an entity. Backlinks alone do not do it.

  • Generative Engine Optimization tactics can boost a source's visibility in AI answers by up to 40%, in controlled experiments across 10,000 queries (Princeton, Georgia Tech, Allen AI, IIT Delhi, 2023).[24]
  • Adding quotations was the single most effective tactic at +27.8%, followed by adding statistics (+25.9%) and citing authoritative sources (+24.9%).[24]
  • Across 75,000 brands, web/brand mentions correlated with AI visibility at 0.664 versus just 0.218 for backlinks, mentions predict AI visibility roughly 3× better than links (Ahrefs, 2025).[25]
  • Classic Domain Rating correlated only weakly with AI visibility (0.27-0.33), confirming that traditional authority metrics carry far less weight in AI search (Ahrefs).[25]
  • Only 8.7% of the top 1,000 websites publish an llms.txt file, the emerging standard is still wide open (Rankability, 2026).[26]
  • Valid llms.txt adoption among the top 10,000 sites reached just 5.61% by mid-2026, up from ~1% a year earlier (HTTP Archive analysis).[27]

6 · The market & where budgets are going

Forecasters and enterprise buyers agree on where this is heading: classic search loses share, and budgets follow attention into AI.

  • Gartner forecasts that traditional search engine volume will drop 25% by 2026, as search marketing loses share to AI chatbots and virtual agents (forecast issued 2024).[29]
  • 98% of enterprise marketing leaders are already optimizing for AI search or plan to within 12 months (Branch, 300 leaders, 2026).[30]
  • 65% are dedicating at least a quarter of their 2026 marketing budget to AI-search optimization, and 28% are allocating more than half (Branch).[30]
  • 64% of marketers worldwide say reduced use of traditional search engines will be the top AI-driven shift affecting digital advertising (EMARKETER).[31]
  • The Generative Engine Optimization services market is projected to grow from roughly $0.9-1.1 billion in 2024-2026 to $7-17 billion by the early 2030s, at 34-41% CAGR (market-research estimates; ranges vary by vendor).[32]

Methodology & sources

We pulled every statistic on this page from a named, primary or authoritative source and checked each one by reading the cited page directly. Anything we could not confirm at its original source, we left out. We prioritized primary publishers (Google, OpenAI, Pew Research, Gartner, Adobe, EMARKETER) and recognized industry datasets (Ahrefs, Semrush, BrightEdge, the Princeton/Georgia Tech GEO paper). Two items are labeled explicitly: Gartner's −25% figure is a published forecast, and GEO market-size figures are commercial market-research estimates with a vendor range shown rather than a single number. Data spans 2023 to 2026, and where a figure changed during 2025 we show both the original and the latest value. Found an error or have newer data? Frequently asked questions

What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO is the practice of optimizing a brand and its content so AI answer engines, ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, mention and cite it when users ask questions. Unlike classic SEO, which targets a ranked list of links, GEO targets inclusion in a single synthesized answer.

Is AI search actually replacing Google?

Not replacing yet, but reshaping it. Over 800 million people use ChatGPT weekly (OpenAI, 2025) and Google's own AI Overviews reach 1.5 billion monthly users (Google, 2025). Gartner forecasts traditional search volume will fall 25% by 2026 as users shift to AI assistants.

Do AI engines drive real website traffic?

Yes, but it is still small and unusually high-quality. LLM referral traffic is under 2% of total referrals for most sites (Search Engine Land, 2026), yet Adobe found AI-referred visitors browse 12% more pages and bounce 23% less, and Semrush found an AI search visitor is 4.4× more valuable than an organic one.

What do AI engines cite most?

Diverse, trusted, and often non-ranking sources. Roughly 62% of Google AI Overview citations come from outside the organic top-10 (Ahrefs, 2026), and Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit together make up about 15% of AI-summary sources (Pew, 2025).

What actually works to get cited by AI?

Controlled research (Princeton/Georgia Tech, 2023) found that adding quotations (+27.8%), statistics (+25.9%) and cited sources (+24.9%) measurably raise visibility in AI answers, up to 40% overall. Ahrefs found brand mentions predict AI visibility about 3× better than backlinks (0.664 vs 0.218 correlation).

Does AI Overviews hurt my click-through rate?

Significantly. Ahrefs found the presence of an AI Overview correlates with a 58% lower clickthrough rate for the top-ranking page (December 2025). Pew found users click a traditional result on just 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without.
